Bobi Wine bodyguard charged with treason following court order to produce him

Court orders security agencies to produce Bobi Wine’s bodyguard dead or alive

Hours after court for the production of Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine’s bodyguard Eddy Ssebuufu, alias Eddie Mutwe, police has charged him with treason, the Nile Post has learnt.

On Thursday, Justice Musa Ssekaana of the High Court in Kampala issued a habeas corpus on Ssebuufu tasking the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen.David Muhoozi, the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence and the Attorney General to produce him to his court dead or alive on September 4.

Ahabeas corpusapplication is made while seeking a person under detention to be brought before a judge or magistrate mainly to secure that person’s release unless lawful grounds are shown to justify their continued incarceration.

However, it has turned out that he had been slapped with treason charges by the Criminal Investigations Division of the Uganda Police Force according to a detention order seen by this website.

The detention order dated August 30th indicated that he had been detained at the Special Investigations Division in Kireka before being transferred to Jinja road police station.

“Receive one Edward Ssebuufu alias Eddy Mutwe charged with treason vide Arua CRB 3444/2018 pending further investigations,” read in part the detention order from Kireka to the Officer in Charge of Jinja Road police station that later indicates that the suspect had been received by the police station.

The latest development however contradicts with earlier statements by police that denied knowing the whereabouts of the lawmaker’s bodyguard.

“The police has not arrested Eddy Mutwe as alleged by social media platforms. If he is missing, we advise that the family immediately reports disappearance of their family member to the nearest police station for efforts to find him,” police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said recently when asked about the matter.

The treason charges against Ssebuufu stem from the fracas in Arua on August 13 where the presidential convoy was stoned before 34 people including legislators were arrested and charged with treason for attempting to harm the president.

Lawyer Anthony Kusingura of Kiiza Mugisha Advocates had in a habeas corpus filed on Tuesday said that Ssebuufu was allegedly kidnapped or arrested by operatives from the military on August 25 from Ssemakokiro plaza in Kamwokya within Kampala and detained in an unknown place.

Justice Ssekaana had indicated that the continued detention of Ssebuufu beyond the mandatory 48 hours without being produced in courts of law was a violation of his constitutional rights before ordering security agencies to produce him on September 4, dead or alive.
