Unpaid housework keeping women poor

A new research conducted by Oxfam Uganda and Uganda Women’s Network shows that unpaid care and domestic workload by women have continued to keep them in poverty and perpetuating inequality over several generations.

According to the report released today at Golf Course Hotel, women spend 8hrs daily on domestic work and unpaid care work as compared to men who spend only four hours.

Carried out in the districts of Kaabongo, Kabale and Kampala, the report titled , Gender roles and the care economy in Uganda households indicate that women are socialized to accept the unpaid care workload from childhood at the expense of their health, happiness, and economic prospects.

The report launch, has also marked the official kick off of a campaign dubbed #FreeWomensHands #ShareCareWork with aim of reducing the burden of unpaid care work and domestic workload on the women.
