Bobi Wine flown to Gulu for trial as police surrounds homes of opposition politicians

Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine was last evening flown from Makindye military barracks to Gulu town for trial today by the army court.

Kyagulanyi was scheduled to appear at the Makindye based General Court Martial but The Nile Post understands that after a security meeting in the afternoon yesterday, it was decided that the legislator's trial be shifted back to Gulu were he was first charged.

Sources within the security told us that there were fears that a trial near the city would inflame an already tense political situation and spark off riots.

Moving the trial 300 km away, security reasoned, was a much safer option.

Asuman Basalirwa, Kyagulanyi's lawyer, confirmed the developments.

Meanwhile, security personnel today sealed off the homes of Dr Kizza Besigye, Ingrid Turinawe and Allan Ssewanyana in a bid to prevent them from

Ssewanyana, the Makindye West MP said he was alerted about the deployment at 2.00 am as he prepared to travel to Gulu.

"I saw three pick-ups surrounding my home and one of the officers told me to get back inside," he said.

Turinawe said her son was stopped from going to school by the security personnel.

"They are outside and are not allowing anyone to get out. They have inconvenienced my neighbours," she said.

The police spokesperson, Emilian Kayima, said the homes of the opposition figures were sealed off after they got intelligence reports that they were planning to lead demonstrations in town.
