Government urged to invest more in renewable energy

The Director General Global Green Growth Institute Dr. Frank Rijsberman has said government should  invest more in renewable energy instead of focusing on the oil sector.

Dr. Rijsberman said oil prices are going down rapidly from diesel which affects the prospects of having a sustainable economy.

"The largest solar plants you find are in U.A.E. They are looking for other alternative ways to protect the economy from where they want to change from oil. So I think countries like Uganda may want to look at other development resources than oil," he said.

Since 2016 Uganda has been partnering with GGGI to promote green growth development in order to achieve its NDP and to become a middle income status country.

Rijsberman said Uganda should use electricity to promote green growth since it’s affordable and can be used by small business communities.

"Electricity in the traditional way creates energy in a very tremendous ways. If you have instances where people can have fridges where they can have small businesses, we can see renewable energy can drive the economy in many  other ways," Rijsberman said.

Peter Okubal, the country representative office of Global Green Growth Institute said,  in vision 2040, the  government had set out its target and development strategy in dam construction, but introducing the concept of green growth does not stop government from pursuing it.’’
