General Electric receives Museveni's nod to modernise hospitals in Uganda

General Electric one of the largest firms in the United States has received the endorsement of President Museveni to modernise hospitals in Uganda.

The endorsement was got during a meeting between the GE senior executives and Museveni at State House Entebbe.

The GE delegation was led by Kieran Murphy, the Global President & CEO of GE Healthcare.

Museveni told the team that modernisation of hospitals will save Uganda lots of money spent during travels to countries like India, South Africa to seek medical treatment.

“On the issue of equipping hospitals with necessary equipment, the government is going to

enter into a partnership with General Electric, an American company that we are dealing with in

the oil sector. It also manufactures medical equipment and will supply these at a lower cost," Museveni wrote on his official twitter handle.

He directed that the US firm gets in touch with ministries of Health and Finance to conclude any outstanding matters.

GE is expected to equip hospitals with the latest technologies and equipment that will enable them carry out complex operations that were previously sought abroad.

Murphy assured that his firm shall deliver exquisite services to Ugandans.

"We are known for quality services and we look forward to working closely with the government of Uganda to modernise the health sector," Murphy said.

General Electric (GE) is  headquartered in BostonMassachusetts and averages revenues of $150 billion a year, five times Uganda's GDP.

GE Healthcare specialises in medical imaging, monitoring, bio-manufacturing, cell and gene

therapy technologies.

It has implemented projects across the globe, more recently in Kenya where it has modernised 98 hospitals.

The meeting was also attended by Farid Fezoua, President & CEO GEHealthcare Africa, Andrew Waititu, General Manager – Eastern Africa and Dr. Henry Mwebesa, AgDirector General of Medical service, Ministry of Health among others.
