Leader of Opposition in Parliament:  Arresting MPs over Abiriga murder is diversionary

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Winnie Kiiza has said the act of arresting legislators in connection to the murder of former Arua Municipality MP Col.Ibrahim Abiriga is only diversionary.

Mukono Municipality legislator Betty Nambooze, was on Wednesday morning arrested from her home by police over her comments in regards to Abiriga's murder.

Speaking to journalists at Jinja Road Police station, Kiiza blamed government of turning focus onto arresting its opponents instead of the real killers.

"I am surprised one of my MPs is arrested over the murder. It is surprising they are arresting friends to Abiriga,"Kiiza said.

"This is diversional and stopping people who would have given credible information."

Speaking during Abiriga's burial, President Museveni pointed out that the deceased could have been killed by opponents of the ruling NRM party.

However, according to Kiiza, this is only diversionary and meant to derail the public from the truth.

"We in opposition don’t have guns. I was surprised why Museveni was quick to point fingers."

She described Nambooze as a person who has never held a gun, adding that it is wrong arresting her over nothing.

The Leader of Opposition in parliament blasted police for the manner in which the legislator was arrested.

"They should have summoned her through the speaker of parliament. We don’t say MPs are above the law but police should use rightful procedures.”
