Police snatch man from angry mob after he was caught stealing woman’s bag in mosque

Police in Kampala are holding a man who for allegedly stealing a woman’s handbag during prayers at Park Enkadde Mall Mosque.

The man, identified as Baryamukono is said to have disguised as a Muslim and accessed the mosque before snatching a bag belonging to Sania Nalwanga and attempting to make off with it.

However, Nalwanga made an alarm prompting people to surround the suspect and start lynching him. It took police effort to rescue Baryamukono from the angry mob.

According to Nalwanga, the bag that Baraymukono attempted to steal had Shs770,000 and a watch.

Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire said Byaramukono had gone to the mosque with intention to steal and not pray.

"These are masqueraders who go to mosques pretending to pray but end up stealing," he said.

Byaramukono is in police custody under file SD Ref 65/22/05/2018.
