SC Villa’s title chase dealt blow as Express are held in relegation

Record champions SC Villa’s chase for this year’s league title was halted for a moment when they were held to a one all draw by Mbarara City FC in the Azam Uganda Premier League on Saturday.

Having seen one their biggest competitors on the trophy win whereas the other lost on Friday, SC Villa hoped to pile more pressure on Vipers at the top of the table by beating Mbarara but this was not possible.

The visitors who were playing without their head coach Wasswa Bbosa who was handed a ban by the competition’s disciplinary panel took the lead through a Yubu Bogere header in the 38th minute but this was not enough to save them.

SC Villa had consolidated well the lead not until the stoppage time when Henry Katongole handled the ball in the box for the centre referee to award a penalty that was converted by Emmanuel Obina to level matters and deny the record champions a win at Kakyeka.

Express held

At Luzira, home side Maroons held Express FC to a one all draw in another encounter in the Azam Uganda Premier League on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead through a 39th minute goal from Michael Birungi but the hosts levelled matters in the 47th minute, thanks to Abdullah Ssenyonga.

Vipers are still top of the Azam Uganda Premier League on 52 points, two ahead of second placed whereas KCCA FC remain third on 48 points.

Express, Proline and Masavu are in the relegation zone in the 14th, 15th and 16th positions respectively.
