Woman fakes own kidnap to obtain money from stingy boyfriend, arrested

Police in Kampala are holding a 21-year old woman who allegedly staged her own kidnap with intent to extort money from her ‘stingy boyfriend’.

Mariam Uwase is said to have manipulated her voice using a voice changing software and made frantic teary phone calls to her boyfriend claiming she had been kidnapped and a Shs25m ransom staked on her head.

Her panicky boyfriend wired Shs700,000 and started pleading for her life with commitment to send the remainder of the money once he chances on it.

The boyfriend however, in due course sought help from police, consequently registering a case at Lugala Police Station SD REF. 10/09/04/2018.

After a few days of negotiation with the alleged abductors, Old Kampala Police launched a secret rescue mission only to find Uwase living fatly and comfortably in a mansion.

Upon questioning, Uwase confessed to staging her own kidnap saying she wanted money to send to her siblings back home but knowing how her boyfriend is close-fisted, he would never have given her the money.

She is currently being detained at Old Kampala Police Station on charges of giving false information.

According  to the Penal Code Act, whoever gives to any person employed in the public service any information which he or she knows or believes to be false, intending thereby to cause, or knowing it to be likely that he or she will thereby cause, any persons employed in the public service to devote his or her time and services to the investigation of such information, commits a misdemeanour.
