UPDATED: Police fire teargas, bullets to disperse Makerere Students

Makerere University students are currently engaged in running battles with Uganda Police Force on the university campus. Students are attempting to demonstrate against new university proposals that will see evening classes scrapped. The university also plans to stop providing meals for students.

Police have fired teargas and live bullets to try and disperse the students who are attempting to stage marches.

Student protester arrested at Makerere University this morning

There are reports that the Makerere University Guild President Papa Were Salim, one of the leaders of the demonstration, has already been arrested by police.

Makerere publicist Ritah Namisango has said they are doing everything possible to engage the students through dialogue.

"The Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe will hold a meeting with the student leadership as soon as he returns from Nairobi," Namisango said.
