Nile Breweries rewards sorghum farmers

Nile breweries Uganda has assured Barley and Sorghum farmers in Soroti that it will provide them with ready market therefore they should grow the two crops extensively.

The promise was made in Soroti during the final of the Kick-Start initiative organised by the beer company to reward sorghum farmers who have adhered to good farming practices, book keeping and consistent financial management systems.

The winner took home a tractor in addition to Shs 72 million.

The Kick-Start initiative was launched in 2017 by Nile Breweries with the objective of empowering farmers to fully embrace commercialised sorghum farming.

It involves training and rating farmers in regard to good farming practices, book keeping and being in managing their finances.

188 applicants received commendations but 4 farmers made it to the final.

The winning prize went to Budesta Adeke from Kumi who took home a tractor in addition to Shs 72 million.

Other finalists, Moses Kweboi and Katende Francis from Kween walked away with an oxplough and two oxen each while Obel Moses from Dokolo was given protective gear.

Handing over the prizes at While handing over the prizes at Soroti Independence ground, the Corporate Affairs director of Nile Breweries, Onapito Ekomoloiot urged farmers to grow more sorghum and barley assuring them of ready market and stable price.
