Kabowa Police station attacked, one dies, two injured

Police are investigating circumstances under which one person was shot dead, two others injured at Kabowa police station in Lubaga Division, Kampala District.

At 9:21 pm on Thursday, an unidentified civilian holding a hammer and a knife attacked Kabowa police station in Lubaga Division and started stabbing crime preventers and police officers.

The suspect who is tall and big in size was later identified as Rogers Kamya. He first stabbed Arafat Wakanyara, a crime preventer whom he found at the entrance of the  police Station. Wakanyara sustained injuries in the stomach.

The assailant later went on to stab a police constable John Bosco Kirya who was guarding the station.

According to the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire, when the police officers inside the station heard screams, they rushed to help.

"They fired gunshots in the air to try and scare the attacker but he just kept pursuing his next victim, " Owoyesigire told Uganda Radio Network.

Kamya was about to stab another officer when the police officers decided to shoot at him.

A police constable whose identity is still withheld by the police fired a bullet but missed the target and shot a by-stander who was part of the crowd watching the scuffle.

Sudi Mupima, a resident of Kabowa was rushed to hospital together with Kirya and Wakanyara.

Mupima died on the way to hospital while the other two are still in being treated. Police has since arrested Kamya.

"We have arrested the attacker and we are still investigating his motive. We will also look into the wayward gunshot but I think it was an accident," Owoyesigire said.
