EU team here to follow up on 2016 election recommendations

The European Union's has sent a team to follow up on recommendations the body meant after the 2016 general elections.

The Election Follow-up Mission (EFM) arrived in the country today and will be here until Thursday, March 8.

According to a statement from, the team was invited by government.

"The EFM will be led by Mr Eduard Kukan, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from Slovakia and Chief Observer of the EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the 2016 general elections in Uganda," read part of the statement.

Kukan said: "The EU stands by Uganda in strengthening democratic principles."

"Since 2006 we have accompanied elections in Uganda. Now is the time for opposition and government to rebuild trust ahead of the coming elections."

EU's observer report on the 2016 elections was mixed.

The report indicated that the February 2016 polls took place in a challenging political environment and offered several recommendations to better subsequent polls.

“EC lacked independence and transparency whereupon the elections fell short of international standards … state actors were instrumental in creating an intimidating atmosphere for both voters and candidates, and police used excessive force against the Opposition, media and the general public, justifying it as a “preventive measure”. This violated fundamental freedoms of movement, expression and assembly, and curbed access to information,” the reads in part.
