Speaking at the function to release the results at the Office of Prime Minister, UNEB Executive Secretary Dan Odongo said that science subject teachers have continuously failed to integrate the teaching theory and practicals.

“In very many schools, practicals are not done by candidates until towards examinations whereas candidates go into the practical examinations ill equipped,”Odongo told journalists.

He also noted that failure to comprehend the English language is another big problem leading to failure of candidates in the UCE examinations.

Odongo revealed that performance in English language declined and this was witnessed in poor spellings, grammar, punctuation and tenses.

“As has been reported in the previous year, teachers are making candidates cram stories from books,”he noted.

Boys continue to perform better

The UCE results released on Wednesday have indicated that boys have continued to perform better than girls according to UNEB.

The results indicated that 11.4 % of the boys passed in division one compared to 8.4% for their female counterparts.

Boys were at 18.6% compared to girls who composed 15.4% of the total number of candidates who passed in division two.

At subject level, girls performed better in English language whereas their male candidates performed better in almost all the other subjects at O-level.

Of the 326212 candidates that sat in 2017 for UCE,15148 (46.5%) were beneficiaries of the Universal Secondary Education .

A candidate is presumed to have passed if they get between divisions one and four.
