Mbale Muslim cleric drowned- Police

Police has cleared the air on the death of a twenty eight year Muslim cleric in Mbale.

On Tuesday morning,  the body of Sheikh Issa Wampongo, a teacher at Yusra primary school in Nakaloke and also a Masters student at Islamic University In Uganda was discovered in a stream after missing from his home on Monday.

Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima told journalists at a news conference in Kampala that the deceased's body was discovered in a river separating Mbale from Budaka on Tuesday morning.

"The postmortem report indicated that he died of drowning, "Kayima told journalists.

According to police, Wampongo had gone missing from his home on Monday before being discovered at around 2pm.

"On Tuesday he left home at 5am to go for prayers but was discovered in a stream at 6am."

In the past, a number of Muslim Clerics have been killed under unknown circumstances in various areas around the country, raising concern from members of the public especially the Muslim community over the safety.

The police mouthpiece however noted that further investigations will reveal the circumstances under which the Muslim cleric drowned.

"His phone and shoes were found on the river bank as his body lay in the water. Circumstances surrounding the death will be investigated."

He added that that there is suspicion that the deceased had a mental challenge.

Last year, the International Crimes Division (ICD)in Kampala sentenced Tabliq sect leader Sheikh Yunus Kamoga to life imprisonment for murdering Sheikh Mustafa Bahiga and Ibrahim Hassan Kirya and attempted murder of Sheikh Haruna Jjemba.
