Police says they will allow fireworks display for only five minutes

Police has given only five minutes to organisers have a display of fireworks on the new year's day.

Addressing a news conference on Friday at the Central Police Station in Kampala, police spokesperson Emilian Kayima told journalists that only 921 venues have been cleared to have a fireworks display all over the country.

"Venues will be inspected by security led by police before the fireworks are displayed. The organisers will be allowed five minutes to have the fireworks display, "Kayima said.

"Anyone who fails to adhere to these regulations will be caught up by the long arm of the law."

In the recent years, police has allowed only three minutes for fireworks display on news year’s day.

According to the police mouthpiece, they will only allow experienced experts to handle fireworks display guided by police.

"Those with knowledge about fireworks will be allowed to handle the display guided by counter terrorism police who must be handed the equipment not used for safe custody."

He however warned against firing of bullets in the air during the new year's day celebrations, adding that whoever violates the directive will face the wrath of the law.

The police spokesperson said police from traffic, counter terrorism and general duties will be stationed at venues and along highways to ensure security .

He warned that on many occasions gangs of youths tend to way lay revellers from new year's day celebrations but noted these will be dealt with.

"Areas like Nansana and Namungoona are fond of having youths who walk in groups to rob but this time round they will not like it,"Kayima warned.

On reckless and drink driving, he warned that perpetuators risk entering the new year in police cells.
