A security guard on Wednesday shot dead a thief who was trying to steal a vehicle from its parking.

The incident happened at Makutano Social Center in Mutundwe, Rubaga division in Kampala  at around 8:30pm Wednesday evening  according to Kampala Metropolitan Area police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigire.

"The guard was on duty when thieves tried to steal motor vehicle UBA, 707P belonging to a one Frank Junju who had parked in the hotel lot. He then shot at one of the thieves, killing him instantly,"Owoyesigire said.

He identified the deceased as Fedelis Kasumba, a resident of Musoke Zone in  Nateete .

The police mouthpiece added that the deceased  had two other people with him in the car before he was shot dead by the guard.

"They fled the scene after he was shot.. His body has been taken to Mulago for postmortem as police investigations continue."

At least five vehicles are stolen every day in Kampala alone whereas over 600 vehicles are stolen all over Uganda annually according to InterPol.

Most these vehicles cross over to the nearby eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo where they cannot be tracked by InterPol.

Recently, Col.Kaka Bagyenda, the Internal Security Organisation Director General expressed concern over the increasing criminality in the central business district including car thefts.

"There are rampant car jacking in Kampala. You arrest one person but they are connected to several other networks known to each other and are sophisticated,"Col.Kaka said.

He said that on many occasions these thugs are connected to officers in security agencies who aid them in carrying out the criminality.

"It is a very dangerous flaw we are investigating. How can a vehicle stolen from Kampala reach Arua without being detected. We need to find out how these cartels operate freely."

The ISO chief revealed that they would be working with former criminals to help them in penetrating these gangs in a bid to wipe them away.
