Age limit: Archbishop Cyprian Lwanga says MPs betrayed voters

The Archbishop of Kampala Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has expressed discontent over the recent passing of the age-limit bill by Parliament.

In his Christmas and end of year message, Lwanga said on Saturday the amendments, which opens the way for those aged 18 years and above to contest for the presidency, were not done in good faith.

Last week, MPs voted to remove the age limit from the Constitution, a process that stirred controversy and criticism within sections of the public.

Dr Lwanga the Archbishop of Kampala said the nation wide consultations were done but there are still feelings of betrayal from the voters by their members of parliament.

He said it is unfortunate that Members of Parliament didn’t listen to advice from religious leaders and elders who requested them not to amend the Constitution.

He urged religious leaders who are concerned about the future of the country should call for a transparent democratic system because it is the foundation upon which citizens’ rights are fully exercised.

Lwanga condemned the alleged misuse of the parliamentary chapel by security officers during the time when the age-limit bill was being debated.

The revelation sparked heated debate among MPs.
