"There is no opposition in Uganda," says Museveni

Featured

President Museveni has said there is no genuine opposition in Uganda, describing some of the people who oppose his regime as disgruntled people, sources have told The Nile Post.

"These are just confused people and a few youths who have no jobs," Museveni said.

The President was speaking at a dinner to celebrate the passing of the age-limit bill by Parliament at State House Entebbe on Friday evening.

The dinner was attended by NRM legislators and the party's top leadership.

Museveni's denigration of the opposition came after Ruth Nankabirwa, the government chief whip,  asked him to discipline the NRM members who voted against the bill.

Nankabirwa had expressed fears that these legislators could become a major headache for NRM and join hands with the opposition to fail government's legislative's agenda.

But Museveni, according to sources, brushed aside her fears and said they will not be a problem because "there is no opposition" in Uganda.

Museveni, sources said, emphasised that government will deal with whoever tries to destabilise the country in the coming years.

Dr Kizza Besigye, the former FDC president, told journalists on Friday that they would resume street protests in the wake of the passage of the age-limit bill by Parliament.

Besigye said it was now justifiable for some Ugandans to pick up arms because the Constitution had been "overthrown."

At the dinner, Museveni also praised Beatrice Anywar, the Kitgum Municipality MP, who voted in support of the bill.

Anywar was a vocal opposition MP and strongly opposed Museveni's attempts to give away part of Mabira forest for sugarcane growing.

Sources told us that some of the MPs had gone to the dinner expecting Museveni to give them a "heavy handshake" for a job well done.

They left cursing after they were given a transport refund of Shs 1 million.
