NRM toasts to Age-limit debate win

NRM leaders yesterday celebrated the passing of the age-limit bill by Parliament with some merrymaking.

After the third reading, Parliament yesterday voted to remove the upper and lower presidential age-caps, restore the term limits and to extend the tenure of the term of MPs to seven years.

After the victory, Kasule Lumumba, the secretary general of the NRM, thanked the parliamentary caucus for what they have done in parliament during the process of  amending the age limit bill.

"We are now jubilating having beaten them hands down and we are here to dance the yellow dance," Lumumba said.

"I thank the members of CEC and NEC for the great work.”

Kasule was speaking at the party end of year dinner at the party headquarters along Kyadondo Road.

The deputy secretary general of NRM, Richard Todwong told The Nile Post the NRM is ready to serve the country even better.

“Parliament has made us proud and serious work is about to commence," he said.

However, he noted that the organisation is facing major challenges of resources and funding.

“The issue of having deployment, ideological orientation, lack resource to always keep our offices open. We don’t pay all our stuff and these are the challenges affecting the organisation," Todwong said.

On Wednesday 20th December 2017, Parliament approved a motion for the continuity of the controversial ‘Age Limit’ bill, which seeks to lift the cap on the presidential age from the Constitution.

A total of 317 Members of parliament voted in favour of the motion while 97 members voted against.
