Court declines to acquit Kaweesi murder suspects

Nakawa grade one magistrate Noah Sajjabbi has declined to dismiss charges against the 14 suspects who are accused of murdering former police spokesperson, AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

In his ruling, Sajjabi informed that magistrates courts lack jurisdiction to either hear or dismiss cases which are capital in nature, and instead advised them to address their complaints to high court.

The suspects through their lawyers led by Anthony Wammeli had asked court to dismiss the murder charges on grounds that they have exceeded the mandatory period of six months without evidence brought against them which violates their constitutional right of having fair and speedy trial.

Wammeli expressed dissatisfaction with the court’s ruling saying that if court lacked jurisdiction, why it entertained the previous bail application, and thus vowed to lodge his claims to the high court so that the charges against his clients are dismissed.

Court has extended the matter until 23rd January  for the suspects to report back in court and on 9th January 2018 to hear the bail application of the five suspects who were recently charged with terrorism .
