City pastor wants Uganda flag changed, Crane standing on one leg removed
A city pastor, Isaac Lubega insists that the current Uganda flag where the Crested Crane is standing on leg and looking backwards is not representative of the country. He proposes that a change is required to introduce a flying crane to symbolise that the country has intentions of moving forward.
Lubega argues that the crested crane standing on one leg ‘facing the dead end’ ignores the strides Uganda has made towards economic, social and political development.

“Uganda has improved in various sectors, people attained education, they have been employed, infrastructure improved and so on and forth. So why should crested crane look behind and stand on one leg as if we have not made any progress since independence?” Lubega questioned.
The current national flag was designed by then Minister of Justice Grace Ibingira, approved by the British administration and adopted on 9th October 1962. It consists of six equal horizontal bands of black (top), yellow, red, black, yellow, and red (bottom); a white disc is superimposed at the centre and depicts the national symbol, a grey crowned crane, facing the hoist side.
Lubega said the new proposed National flag will consist of;
Red star and the compass – Spirit of nationalism and Leadership rotation
15 Black stars – 15 Ethnic political regions of Uganda with the spirit of unity and ownership
White and Flying Crane – Pure characters and prosperity
Black – Redemption and patriotism
Yellow – Righteousness and stability
Red – Confidence and Development
However, for the proposal to see the light of the day, Constitutional Lawyer Abdallah Kiwanuka says there is need for Lubega to go through the legal procedure.

“A private individual will have to go through his member of parliament, who will initiate the process. Or a private individual can go by a referendum by writing directly to the Electoral commission and he will collect the signatures."
Lubega’s proposal also suggests that for the Age limit scuffle to come to an end, amending article 69 clause 2 section c to adopt the regional political system of governance would come in handy .
“Multi party system is the cause of all wars in the world, that’s why we are having the ‘togikwatako /gikwateko’ fights. But my new idea of regional governance will unite us .”
Uganda has fifteen regions ; Buganda , Ankole , Bunyoro , Tooro , Busoga ,Acholi , Bugisu , Bukedi , Karamoja , Kigezi , Lango , Madi , Sebei , Teso and WestNile that constitutes the Nations-State of the Republic of Uganda . Lubega said “the political power will rotate around the four geographical parts of Uganda; Central, Eastern, Western and Northern .”
“If this term the president comes from the North , next will come from West and the circle continues like that and all Ugandans will feel represented ."
