Fr Kibuuka consecrated Bishop of Evangelical Church

Fr. Jacinto Kibuuka, the former Roman Catholic Church Priest was today consecrated as Bishop of the Evangelical Orthodox Church at Mamre Prayer Centre in Namugongo. He is now the bishop for Central and Eastern Uganda.

President Museveni was represented by Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, the minister for Justice, at a colourful function attended by thousands of followers.

Otafiire who sat next to Hajj Abdul Nadduli, the minister without Portfolio, later moved forward to get Kibuuka’s blessings.

Kibuuka was last year suspended from the Catholic Church by Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, Archbishop of Kampala over what he called disobedient.

This suspension prompted Kibuuka to denounce the Catholic Church and opted to start Mamre Prayer Centre located in Janda-Namugongo.

According to The Observer newspaper, on July 13 2016 when he announced his defection from the Roman rite of Catholicism to the Antiochian rite, Kibuuka also announced that as an ordained and innocent Catholic priest, he would go on with the performance of his priestly duties.

“I will continue celebrating the mass of St Chrysostom in the Antiochian rite and I will continue offering all the sacraments of the Catholic Church in that rite,” Kibuuka vowed.

He denied that he was being disobedient to the archbishop.

“Obedience is only when the superior is virtuous,” he told The Observer newspaper without elaborating but wondered why Lwanga had not taken any action against the priests that he (Kibuuka) had accused of tormenting him.

President Museveni failed to reconcile Kibuuka and Lwanga.

Sources familiar with the failed reconciliatory meetings said Lwanga turned to President Museveni after he failed to rein-in the errant priest through the formal church structures.
