Age limit: Opposition MPs fail Magyezi to present, dashes out angry

Igara West MP Raphael Magyezi who recently tabled the age limit bill that seeks to amend the Constitution and remove the presidential age limit has on Tuesday afternoon stormed out of the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee currently discussing the bill.

The committee chaired by Jacob Oboth Oboth asked Magyezi to provide a copy of the bill and a certificate of financial implication to which he did.

Meanwhile, before he could continue, Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju interrupted saying that the manner in which the committee had been handled was not right and could stop other people from coming to give their views about the contentious bill.

In response, Oboth Oboth said that even if members invited don’t turn up to the committee, it will not have any effect on the process.

“I wish they don’t come. Still even if those members don’t come, this committee will come up with its report” the Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee told legislators especially from the opposition but this didn’t go well with them accusing him of bias.

Lwemiyaga legislator said he was baffled by the remarks made by Oboth Oboth saying it was unwarranted adding that the committee has caught the attention of the entire country and ridiculing would be witnesses is not fair.

Meanwhile, when Magyezi was asked to continue with his presentation in regards to the bill, opposition MPs continued heckling and raising points of order interrupting Magyezi.

Efforts by the committee chairperson to request the MPs to calm down proved futile as the deafening noise continued. The infuriated Magyezi later got off his seat and exited the committee before being escorted by some opposition MPs who continued heckling him.
