Basena undecided on Cranes job

“I am still pondering on several things before I can make up my mind to apply for the job. But I think we local coaches also have what it takes to manage the national team,” Basena said on Monday as the Uganda FA officially opened the process to receive applications till October 29th.

Basena who guided Uganda to qualification for the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) after seeing off Rwanda has been in-charge of the Uganda Cranes for the last two months since Serbian born coach Milutin ‘Micho’Sredojevic quit because of unpaid salary arrears.

But last week former Uganda Cranes coach and current coach of Azam Uganda Premier League Champions, KCCA FC, Mike Mutebi said it is not yet the time for local coaches to take charge of the national team as they need to concentrate on talent development.

Edgar Watson, the Uganda FA chief executive officer made it clear last week that they will announce a new coach on November 15th. The new coach will be expected to take charge of the team during the regional Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup in Kenya.

Former Zambia FA President and 1988 African player of the Year, Kalusha Bwalya will head the interview panel that will vet the coaches.

The panel will also have Watson, a representative from the National Council of Sports (NCS), Stone Kyambadde, a member of the technical committee  and the Fufa’s technical director Asuman Lubowa.
