Fr Gaetano: I regret serving the NRM

KABALE: Father Gaetano Batanyenda, the  parish priest of Kitanga parish, Kabale district, has said that he regrets his past association with the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

Speaking to The Nile Post, Gaetano said President Museveni had driven the country towards a dangerous path whose outcome can only be destruction.

“If there is any one that joined the NRM because of me, then  they should quit because you can no longer trust the party,” he said.

Gaetano served in the Constituent Assembly as one of the members nominated by President Museveni and was a key mobiliser of the party in Kigezi sub region even as he actively served in church.

He remains a political king maker of sorts in the sub region.

He said a new youthful breed of leaders such as Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine had emerged meaning that the old guard must give way.

Batanyenda said Museveni should not dismiss this group as liars.

“If President Museveni is not in the class of Bobi Wine then why did he respond to his  message and what is Museveni’s class,” he queried.

Gaetano also added his voice among those opposed to amending the Constitution to lift the presidential age limit.

Currently a bill, which seeks to remove the presidential upper limit age cap, is before the parliamentary legal affairs committee.
