Ghana leaves Uganda's World Cup dream hanging

Match result: Uganda 0 Ghana 0

Only a miracle can now make Uganda's World Cup dream alive after being held to a goalless draw by Ghana on Saturday at Namboole.

The home side looked blunt upfront with strikers Derrick Nsibambi and Emmanuel Okwi struggling to beat the Ghanaian defence.

The youthful Black Stars team who missed services of over four experienced players, including the captain Asamoah Gyan,  looked solid on the day, giving their hosts a run for their money.

The Cranes almost lost all the three points following a goalkeeping error that saw Ghana score through Raphael Dramena only for the Sudanese referee to cancel it for a free kick for the hosts.

Speaking during the post match press conference, Cranes interim coach Moses Basena admitted his team was not at its best in the day.

"We had problems going foward. I am disappointed with the result,"Basena said.

About his striking line, Basena said both Nsibambi and Okwi didn't do as expected.

He said that Okwi always played in a wider position, instead of the centre, making the striking force inefficient.

The Cranes coach admitted that as had earlier predicted, the Ghana youngsters proved their worth.

"They caused havoc, "he added.

However, Cranes captain Dennis Onyango said the team still has some hope as they go into the last game.

"Anything can happen in Egypt, "he said.

Ghana's tactician Kwese Appiah applauded his players for a game well played at Namboole.

The draw means Uganda is still second in group E with eight points, two above Ghana who are third.

A win for Egypt tomorrow against Congo Brazaville will see them qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Egypt are on nine points with a game in hand.
