Teachers told to declare their wealth or poverty before August 7

The Uganda National Teachers' Union (UNATU), the umbrella body for teachers in the country, has asked teachers at all levels to make a declaration of their wealth or poverty to the Inspector General of Government (IGG) before August 7 2021.

"This serves to inform the entire leadership and membership of UNATU that while previously the Leadership Code Act 2002 required only leaders to declare their income, assets and liabilities, this Act, now the Leadership Code (amendment) Act, 2021 requires all public officers to make a declaration," read the letter seen by The Nile Post.

According to the letter, all categories of teachers serving in the primary, secondary, Business Technical Vocational Education and Training (BTVET) and tertiary institutions are considered as public officers.

The Leadership Code (amendment) Act, 2021 was assented to on April 23 2021 and took effect on May 7 202.

It requires all public officers within three months after the commencement of the Act; within 3 months after appointment to the public service and thereafter, every five years during the month of April to submit to the Inspector General, a written declaration of his or her income, assets and liabilities in the prescribed form.

Filbert Baguma, the general secretary said that all public officers including the teachers are mandated to comply or be prepared to face penalties resulting from the breach of this Act.

"This therefore serves to remind you to make a declaration to the Inspector General before the deadline of 7th August 2021," the letter stated.
