Beti Kamya: "I have new tactics to fight corruption"

Featured

The newly-appointed Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Olive Kamya, has scoffed at critics questioning her appointment and ability to handle the task at hand, insisting that she is the right person to occupy the office.

Last week, President Museveni appointed Kamya as the new IGG replacing Justice Irene Mulyagonja whose contract expired on July 5 2020.

Shortly after her appointment, critics questioned Kamya’s ability to handle such a big office.

However, Kamya insisted that she is well aware and understands the demands of her new office and will shock many people with her new tactics to curb corruption and educate the masses on several other roles of this office.

Speaking to the media on Sunday, Kamya said that she is ready for the task and would like full support from the public to end graft in the country, as it is the biggest impediment to development.

"I thank the president for entrusting me with yet another important office. I am the right candidate and of course I will make it and I have the qualifications. The naysayers are always there and I really feel sorry for them, "she said.

She explained that the Constitution and the Inspectorate of government Act give her powers to execute her duties without any interference.

"You are covered by the Constitution, you are covered by the laws that govern the office. Once you rally the entire population and I think that is where my strong points will be to rally the entire population including the public servants to do this for Uganda, ”she said.

President Museveni in 2018 criticised former IGG, Irene Mulyagonja for not doing much in ending corruption in public offices and he subsequently created a parallel anti-corruption unit under State House. The unit is headed by Lt Col Edith Nakalema. However, corruption has persisted.
