Final year undergraduate and graduate medical students of Makerere University are expected to report to the university premises in order to complete the semester on October 3, 2020.

According to a letter from Makerere's Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, final year students of other courses will wait a little longer, and report on October 17, 2020 to complete the balance that was left of the semester when the university was closed  due a presidential directive to stop the spread of the novel Coronavirus.

President Museveni on Sunday announced that final year students at all levels in the country could resume their studies.

In a letter dated September 21, 2020, Prof. Nawangwe said that arrangements are underway to receive the final year students as directed by President Museveni.

"Final year medical students will resume studies for the second semester on 3rd October 2020 and end on 28th November 2020. The rest of the final year undergraduate students and the graduate students will report on 17th October 2020 and end on 12th December 2020," Prof. Nawangwe said in a letter.

Prof. Nawangwe said that because the university halls can not accommodate all the final year students, those who were ordinarily residing in halls will be admitted and non-residents will continue residing off campus.

" Announcements will be made to all the students in good time to allow foreign students to undergo quarantine if necessary," he added.

Makerere University had earlier this month released a plan to complete the semester for all students through digital learning under the Open, Distance, and E-Learning mode (ODEL) and according to Prof. Nawangwe, the plan is still on.

" After receipt of clearance by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), teaching for the rest of the students will commence on 15th October, 2020. Arrangements for this are underway," Prof. Nawangwe.

Students at Makerere University will report at a time when the university is grappling with the after effects of the fire that razed down the university's main administrative building, the Ivory Tower.
