Chameleone: "Erias Lukwago is only good at complaining"

Kampala mayoral aspirant, Joseph Mayanja aka Jose Chameleone has slammed the incumbent Erias Lukwago for failing to fix the drainage systems in the city.

His remarks came shortly after police on Friday recovered two bodies along Nakivubo Channel at Clock Tower near Total fuel station, after a heavy downpour.

Like other parts of the country, Kampala city is usually left with flooded roads and buildings whenever it rains heavily due to, partly, the poor drainage system.

Speaking to the media at his office in Kampala, Mayanja said Lukwago is only good at complaining instead of working for the people of Kampala who are in dire need of services.

"There is no any country where you will go and find the local government doesn't work with government. Lukwago has failed to work with government and that's the reason why services have not come down to the people,"he said.

Mayanja said if elected as the Kampala lord mayor come 2021,his focus will be on improving the drainage system in the city.

"Floods are an after effect of many years of no work to improve our drainage. Since [John] Ssebaana built the Nakivubo channel, there has not been a major improvement on the channel's coverage and this is part of the main problem,"he noted.

In response, Lukwago said the people of Kampala are well aware of what he has done for the for the period he has spent in the office.

But Mayanja challenged him to put his record of work on table so that people affected by floods can see and understand his achievements.

"Otherwise people who lose their livelihood due to floods will not listen to those empty words. Fixing the drainage system is number one on our agenda. One way is by regulating the release of runoff water to our channels through greening and a well worked water reservoir system,"Mayanja said.

Mayanja also unveiled his task force that will be headed by Samuel Mukaaku Lubega as the chairman and spokesman.

Mayanja who is running under the National Unity Platform said he will be picking nomination papers on Monday from the Electoral Commission, and interact with fellow artists on the same day.
