Three bodies retrieved from River Nile

UPDF Marines and police divers have retrieved two bodies from the Sunday boat accident on River Nile.

The bodies are of Amira Alwi a daughter to Hassan Alwi, one of the victims of the Sunday boat accident, and the local fisherman identified as Patrick Odoi who had attempted to rescue them.

The bodies were found at different locations; one was near former Bujagali falls about 5Km away from Kiira Power Dam and the other was found at Bujowali

According to UPDF Spokesperson in Busoga sub-region Captain Edwin Mawanda, Amira’s body was retrieved at 2:00 pm whereas and the fisherman retrieved over 2 hours later.

How it happened

On Sunday 30th August, businessman Hassan Alwi the proprietor of East African University went for a boat cruise with his family at the source of the Nile however, their boat motor engine developed a mechanical problem.

Due to the increasing Water levels in River Nile, their boat was swept by the running water into the Kiira Power Dam.

Six people were involved in the accident including 5 (Five) people who were on Hassan Alwi's boat and the local fisherman who rushed to rescue them.

Three people survived including Hassan Alwi himself, his 12-year-old son, and the tour guide Patrick Okidi who jumped out of the boat and took refuge near the bridge.

Three people died namely Shakira Super, wife to Hassan Alwi, Amira Alwi a daughter to Hassan Alwi, and Patrick Odoi the local fisherman who rushed to rescue them.

Another body found

There is another body of a yet to be identified man which was found near the Railway bridge earlier in the morning.

Captain Edwin Mawanda says this body of a man in his 30s was discovered during the search for the boat accident victims.
