Minister says there is no money to handle disasters

The Minister of Relief and Disaster Preparedness, Hillary Onek, has disclosed to Parliament that his ministry no longer has resources to handle the increasing disasters in the country.

Onek said the ministry is only left with resources to carry out resettlement of the affected mudslide persons from the mountain Elgon.

As floods continue to ravage parts of Uganda, a number of areas are experiencing severe effects and an estimated 300,000 people have been displaced.

According to the Uganda Meteorological Department, above normal heavy rains are expected to continue in the coming weeks across the country.

The floods have also been coupled by the fire outbreaks on public markets, buildings amongst other emergencies.

However Onek said there are no resources to handle the occurring emergencies in the country.

He said even the Shs 18 billion request sent to the ministry of Finance to help handle the small disasters that have been caused by the currents floods has not yet been released.
