NRM Caucus summoned over hoes, Makerere University

President Museveni has abruptly summoned the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Parliamentary Caucus for a meeting on a number of issues; majorly Makerere University and hoes.

The meeting, currently underway at the office of the prime minister is expected to discuss the impasse at Makerere University between government and students who are striking over a 15 percent tuition increment.

President Museveni has already directed the military police to withdraw deployment at Makerere University where they had laid siege since last week.

Also on the agenda is the matter of distribution of hoes, which president Museveni promised during his 2016 campaigns, but they have brought chaos.

Museveni while campaigning for his fifth term in office in 2015 directed the Prime Minister to procure 18 million hoes in the 2016/17 budget, arguing that the hoes would boost food security and incomes for small landowners which would spur Uganda to an industrial economy in 2040.

However, the hoes would be distributed in phases to accommodate budget constraints.

Now a section of minister and Members of Parliament are accusing the Prime Minister’s office of using the same hoes to contribute to the political capital of specific politicians and ministers.
