Uganda at 57: Zimbabwe president, Mnangagwa honoured with highest civilian medal

Zimbabwe President, Emerson Mnangagwa has been awarded with the Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa medal during Uganda’s 57th independence celebrations held in Sironko district.

The medal is the highest civilian award of the Ugandan honours system and is awarded to heads of state and government leaders.

On Wednesday, Gen.Ivan Koreta who is the chairperson of the awards committee described Mnangagwa as a peacemaker and pacifier whose contribution to the independence of Zimbabwe and Africa at large ought to be recognised.

“His history is characterised by selfless dedication and service to his country,” Gen.Koreta said, before ushering in President Museveni to decorate him with the medal.

Speaking shortly after being decorated, Mnangagwa said the medal was not bestowed on him but on his country adding that it is a sign of the good relationship between Zimbabwe and Uganda.

“Your excellency Gen. Yoweri Museveni, on behalf of my delegation and the people of Zimbabwe, I feel extremely humbled by the honour you have bestowed not on me but my country,”Mnangagwa said.

“This is in recognition of the journey we have traveled as people and countries to where we are today. We are committed to developing our countries, to integrate with the rest of the region and African continent.”

A rare honour

The Most Excellent Order of the Pearl of Africa medal is a rare honour that only seven people in the past have received it.

In the past only Paul Kagame, Jakaya Kikwete, Julius Nyerere, Theodoro Obiang Guema , Amando Guebuza(Mozambique), Aga Khan IV and Dr Abiy Ahmed(Ethiopia) have received the medal which was instituted in 2005.
