Police has announced a plan to carry out inspection of saunas in the country and those that do not meet the required standards to operate will be closed.

This comes in the wake of explosion at Marcos Gym and Sauna in Kyaliwajjala, Wakiso district last week.

The explosion at Marcos steam and spa on 16th September injured five people according to police the saunas steam boiler over heated and blow up.

A similar incident also happened in Ntinda a Kampala suburb in 2011 where 8 people were injured.

“We have now come up with a duty to ensure that all places of sauna have occupational safety and health certificate which are issued by the ministry of Gender Labour and Social Development. Guest houses that are operating saunas and don’t have any occupational safety an health safety and certificates are going to be closed," Fred Enanga, the policer spokesperson told journalists on Monday.

Enanga confirmed that an explosion in Matugga town in which one person died on Saturday came from highly volatile liquid in metal container.

“The projector actually had incendiary liquid so it ignited the liquid which upon impact triggered that explosion,”Enanga added.

He also raised concerns that there could be such kind of materials buried in different places.
