Trailer truck veers off road, enters Centenary banking hall

A trailer truck this morning failed  to brake, veered off the road and rammed into the walls of Centenary Bank branch in Bugiri, only to come to a full stop in their banking hall.

The trailer truck, registration number UBD669H, was coming from Tororo when on reaching Bugiri, its driver lost control.

According to an eye witness, the driver must have been sleeping when the entire incident happened. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

“The driver must have been asleep because the trailer came at high speed, then when it hit the speed bumps in Bugiri town, it just went off the road, into the bank,” Nile Post and NBS TV reporter at the scene said.

The driver of the trailer truck has been arrested for alleged reckless driving, while police maintain deployment at the scene.

The bank was already open when the incident happened, but there were no clients, while the bank staff were not yet in the banking hall.

Nile Post contacted one of the bank’s staff who confirmed the incident but refused to speak further.

“Please contact our spokesperson, the bank has a central communication system,” she said.

Yesterday, at least eight people were killed when a trailer collided with a passenger bus from Kenya in Nakawa, along the Jinja-Tororo highway.

The trailer was coming from the Kampala direction when it veered off the road and crashed into the Kampala-bound Modern Coast bus, witness Besweri Kawanguzi said.

He was on his way to his farm at around 5.30am when he witnessed the accident.

The injured were taken to various hospitals, including Bugiri, Iganga and Fast Line Medical Centre in Bugiri.

Police took the bodies to Bugiri Hospital mortuary.
