URA: “We have not frustrated oil pipeline project”

The commissioner general of the Uganda Revenue Authority, Doris Akol has refuted allegations that the tax body is frustrating efforts to construct  a heated oil pipeline from Hoima to Tanga in Tanazania.

Tanzanian president John Pombe Magufuli threw a spanner in the works during the Tanzania-Uganda Business Forum last week when he said taxation issues in Uganda had held up the pipeline project.

But Akol denied the claims saying delays in the construction of the pipeline were being caused by other factors.

President Museveni in response to his Tanzanian counterpart at the forum revealed that he will examine the matter.

Total suspended its planned 1,445-kilometer $3.5 billion crude export pipeline from Uganda to Tanzania after the collapse of a deal to buy a stake in Tullow Oil Plc’s oil fields in Uganda.

Economic expert Ramathan Ggoobi said a common ground needs to be reached by the top brass of government if the oil is indeed to flow.

He however warned about the commitment levels of Tanzania.
