Police officer arrested over Entebbe expressway shooting

A Police officer has been arrested in connection with the gruesome shooting of two people along the Kampala- Entebbe Expressway on Thursday night.

Florence Maya Kamukazi and Joshua Ruhegyera Nteyireho were shot dead by unknown assailants at Nambigirwa Bridge in a Toyota Prado registration Number UAW 534B headed to Mpala.

However, according to security sources, Davis Taremwa, a police officer attached to the Counter-Terrorism unit was arrested by security personnel at Hidden Treasure hotel in Entebbe where he was hiding after the incident.

The officer according to the sources is at the rank of constable.

Earlier reports from police indicated that the Entebbe DPC, Baker Kawonawo responded to information in regards a shooting along the Entebbe Expressway by sending his men on ground.

A group of detectives , scenes of crime officers and sniffer dogs were backed up by the Police Flying Squad Unit, JATT and other security agencies who rushed to the scene of the crime.

An AK47 rifle belonging to police and 27 rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene.

A magazine has 30 rounds of ammunition and according to police, three empty cartridges were recovered at the scene.

At the scene, a counter terrorism Uganda Police cap and a magazine porch were recovered from the motor vehicle in which the deceased were traveling.

It is highly suspected that the cap found in the car belonged to Taremwa.

However, investigations into the gruesome shooting are continuing.

Police weighs in

However, according to Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, preliminary findings indicate that Joshua Ruhegyera Nteyireho had earlier requested Taremwa who was on guard at Hidden Treasure hotel to escort him to Millennium hotel in Zana where he had arranged a business transaction.

The officer is said to have withdrawn from his beat and the three people drove to Zzana.

“The circumstances sorounding their movement from Millennium hotel up to the stage where the shooting occurred at Namibgirwa bridge. It is what the task team of investigators and forensic experts are working to determine,”Enanga said in a statement.

“We have meanwhile arrested our officer and placed him under criminal investigation. He is being examined for traces of evidence that could have remained on him especially gun powder to help place him at the scene.”

The police mouthpiece added that the Counter-Terrorism Police officer’s movements from Hidden Treasure hotel at 8 pm to when he returned to the hotel are being investigated.
