Museveni to host Cranes for luncheon at Entebbe after Afcon exit

President Museveni is this afternoon expected to host the delegation of the Uganda Cranes team that will be returning from their African Nations Cup expedition in Egypt.

According to a message from the Presidential Press Secretary, Linda Nabusayi, the event is to be held at 3pm at Entebbe State House.

“The President will this afternoon host the Uganda Cranes team at State House Entebbe at 3pm,”read in part the message from Nabusayi.

Despite going into the 2019 edition of the continent’s most prestigious football tournament as an underdog, Uganda finished on a high after being eliminated from the round of 16 by Senegal.

The feat meant that for the first time in 41 years since 1978, Uganda not only played in the round of 16 but also won its first game at Afcon in the same period.

However, before playing their game against Senegal, Uganda Cranes players went on a sit down strike and refused to train as per the program saying they were demanding for bonuses worth $6,000 equivalent to Shs22 million for the win against Democratic Republic of Congo and draw against Zimbabwe in the group stages.

Later, the football governing body, FUFA accepted to pay the money and the players resumed training.

On Sunday, the local football governing body announced they had agreed to part ways with the national team coach, Sebastien Desabre, only hours after the team’s exit from the Afcon tournament.

“The reasons for termination of the employment contract are for the benefit and growth of both parties,” FUFA said in a statement.

It however remains unclear whether the two developments will be on the agenda during the meeting between the President and the Cranes team later on Monday.
