Egyptian FA president resigns after sacking national team coach over Afcon exit

The Egyptian Football Association president, Hany Abou- Rida has resigned shortly after sacking the national team coach Javier Aguirre and his entire coaching staff following their shock exit from the African Nations Cup they are hosting.

Hosts Egypt suffered an embarrassment when they were beaten and eliminated by South African from this year’s Afcon tournament in front of their home fans at the Cairo International Stadium in the round of 16.

Following the shocking exit, the national team coach and hi entire backroom staff were shown the exit by the Egyptian Football Federation over the dismal performance that saw them exit.

"I am the one responsible ( for the exit).I am responsible for all the selections and the end results, but I'm still proud of this group of players,” Aguirre said in the post -match press conference before he was fired shortly.

However, shortly after sacking the national coach, the Egyptian Football Federation president Hany Abou- Rida followed suit by resigning from his position.

The Egyptian Football Association said the decision for Abou- Rida to resign had been "a moral obligation after disappointing Egypt’s supporters" in the 1-0 shock defeat to South Africa that saw them eliminated from the 2019 edition of the Afcon.

Abou –Rida resigned together with his entire technical and administrative staff.
