Local government workers to decide next course of action after missing out on salary increment

Local government workers under their umbrella body, the Uganda Local Government Workers’ Union(ULGWU) are set to hold an extra ordinary general meeting to decide their next course of action in regards salary increment.

The new salary structure released by the Ministry of Public Service this month showed there was a salary increment for eight categories of government employees including district health officers and their assistants, Specialist medical officers, dental surgeons and pharmacists in salary scale U2, consultants, senior consultants and directors of hospitals.

However, according to the ULGWU General Secretary, Hassan Lwabayi Mudiba, local government workers and non-science public servants have been left out in the new salary structure by government, a thing he says is not fair to them.

“It was agreed in the Collective Bargaining Agreement phase II 2019/2020 national budget that 412 billion shillings be given to cater for salary enhancement for local government workers and non-science public officers but no commitment has been made for the same,”Mudiba said.

According to the local government workers General Secretary, government ought to stop the discrimination of non-science public officers so as to attain harmonious labour relations in service provision.

“We have therefore called for a special national conference to generate resolutions to be presented to government to make sure salary enhancement for non-science public officers is also considered,”Mudiba said.

The special meeting is set for July 12 at Jokas Hotel, Bweyogerere in Wakiso district.

The July 1 circular from the Ministry of Public Service indicated that the country’s wage bill had increased from Shs4.2 trillion in the 2018/2019 financial year to Shs4.69 trillion.
