Uganda falls to Mane’s Senegal to bow out of the Afcon tournament

Featured

A Sadio Mane 15th minute goal was enough for Senegal to not only beat Uganda but also eject them from this year’s Afcon finals in Egypt.

Following an awful physical first half that saw the team booked three times, Uganda was finally paid for its silly mistakes that saw Godfrey Walusimbi’s pass blocked before Sadio Mane put the ball past goalkeeper Denis Onyango for the game’s only goal.

In the second half, the East African representatives returned a quite refined team as they avoided the mistakes they had made in the first half but this could not save them.

However, the Lions of Teranga almost doubled their lead when Onyango fouled Mane in the 18 yard box but the resultant penalty kick by the Liverpool star was saved by the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper.

Despite having a better possession of the ball in the second half, at the end of the day, Senegal progressed to the next round after beating Uganda one nil, thanks to a Sadio Mane 15th minute goal that meant the end of the road for the East African side that was playing in the continent’s most prestigious tournament for the 7th time.

Despite being eliminated, Uganda made a piece of history by reaching the last 16 for the first time in 41 years, a feat last achieved by the team that was beaten by eventual winners Ghana in the 1978 edition.

Uganda’s elimination means all the East African representatives in this year’s Afcon finals have been eliminated.
