Three Kaweesi murder suspects released on bail by Nakawa court re-arrested

Three suspects in the murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi who were in January 2018 released on bail have been re-arrested, their lawyer has said.

In January last year, the Nakawa magistrates court released the suspects on bail but on Tuesday when the case was supposed to come up for mention, their lawyers led by Anthony Wameli told court that three of them had been re-arrested by security.

“They have been re-arrested for unknown reasons. We know they are around Kireka(Special Investigations Division) but were told we could not access them,” Wameli told journalists at Nakawa.

He named the arrested suspects as Ali Mugoya, Hibwagi Sinani and Abdalla Kala.

When contacted for a comment, Police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said he would get back to me after making inquiries over the same but noted that CID officers are attending a retreat.

The trio and others including Umar Maganda, Ahmed Hilali and Ahmed Ssenfuka currently facing charges related to professing to belong to Allied Democratic Forces, a rebel group which was declared as being a terrorist organization.

On Tuesday, the prosecution told court the case file was not available because it had been taken to the International Crimes Division of the High Court in Kololo and that it had not yet been returned.

In response, the defence  lawyer Wameli asked court to dismiss the case for taking too long  but  the magistrate, Ponsiano odwoli  said he is giving  prosecution only one chance up  to August 1 and if not, he would dismiss the matter.

The group is part of the 23 suspects who were arrested over the murder of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi in March 2017 together with his bodyguard and driver as he left his home in Kulambiro, a Kampala suburb.

This is the second time they are re-arrested after a 2018 incident in which security apprehended them after being released on bail by the Nakawa magistrate’s court.

Eight of these were committed to High Court for trial but have since failed to secure bail, despite being granted to them by Lady Justice Lydia Mugambe for lack of identification documents.

Their lawyers say the documents were confiscated by security during their arrest in 2017.
