MPs tell government to suspend officials implicated in BoU scandal

A section of legislators has asked government to immediately suspend all the officials at the Bank of Uganda said to be implicated in the on-going currency scandal.

The MPs also want government to hire an international audit firm to do a forensic audit of the central bank.

The calls come three months after the parliamentary committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) investigated the bank's role in the closure of seven commercial banks and came out with a damning report.

The MPs who included Hassan Kaps Fungaroo of Obongi County, Felix Okot Ogong of Dokolo North, James Waluswaka of Bunyole West, Kamusiime Pentagon of Butemba County, James Kaberuka of Kinkizi West, said what is happening at the central bank is regrettable, unethical and a disgrace to the leadership of the bank.

These legislators want government to immediately suspend all officials at the central bank said to be implicated in the currency printing scandal.

Michael Mawanda, the Igara East MP said he intended to ask for leave of Parliament to draft a private member's bill aimed at streamlining the management and operation of Bank of Uganda.

Other legislators urged government to recall the current currency and have a new currency printed in order to the save the country’s economy.
