Ministry seeks funds to operationalise new districts

The ministry of Local Government has tasked the ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development to immediately release the funds to enable the full operationalisation of the new created six districts.

According to the Minister for Local Government Tom Butiime, the delay in electing leaders in the vacant positions in these districts has not only affected service delivery to the people but has also undermined the the rule of governance in these new districts.

The 9th Parliament passed a government motion creating 23 new districts that were supposed to be operationalised in a four phased manner.

On the 1st of July 2018 six new districts of Kapelebyong, Kwania, Kassanda, Kikuube and Bugweri started their operation but the current situation has attracted the attention of many legislators forcing the minister of Local Government, Butiime to task the Ministry of Finance to immediately release funds for the elections in these districts.

Yesterday, the legislators tasked government to inform the affected districts whether they will have elections before the 2021 general elections.

The legislators wondered whether there is a hidden agenda of government in creating the districts if they cannot  organise elections.

Butiime said they will hold a special meeting with officials from the Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Finance to see how the new districts can be funded to enable them function.
