MPs go two months without salaries

Many voters have been asking why their MPs are a rare feature in the constituencies.

We have got the answer: They have no money.

Parliament yesterday confirmed that members of Parliament have spent two months without receiving their monthly salaries hence affecting their constitutional role of representation and monitoring.

The two Parliamentary Commissioners Peter Ogwang and Arinaitwe Rwakajara who extended their apologies to the legislators for the delay asked for patience as efforts are being done to have the ministry of Finance release the funds.

Some members expressed mixed reactions on the delay to receive their money with some faulting the ministry of Finance and others castigating their colleagues who only depend on the salary.

Parliament has 456 members and each paid over 30 million shillings on a monthly basis as salary, fuel allowance, town maintenance among others costs.

The commissioners whose tenure of two and a half years was renewed last week vowed to crack a whip on journalists who they claimed are writing fake news about Parliament thereby tarnishing its image.
