Onyango guides Mamelodi Sundowns to ninth PSL title in South Africa
Uganda Cranes skipper and custodian Denis Onyango put up a man of the match performance to guide his team, Mamelodi Sundowns to their ninth and second Premier Soccer League (title) in a row.
Going into the Saturday game, the Masandawana were only two points above former Cranes coach Micho Sredjovic’s Orlando Pirates and their respective last games were a do or die but the former emerged the victors.
However, it was the Masandawana who were pipped to the post after a Phakamani Mahlambi 43rd minute goal was enough for the Brazilians to earn a narrow win in a game that Onyango proved his worth.
The result from Free State Stars’ Bethlehem was devastating to Micho’s Pirates who despite winning at home three nil had been pipped to the title by Mamelodi Sundowns.
The result ensured the Masandawana won their record ninth Premier Soccer League title and the fourth under the era of current coach, Pitso Mosimane.
Dennis Onyango didn't disappoint.
The Brazillians won the South African league in 1998, 1999,2000,2006,2007, 2014, 2016, 2018 and now 2019.
Other teams to have won the PSL previously include Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs for four times each whereas Super Sport United has won the South African league three times.
For 33-year-old Cranes captain Denis Onyango who joined Masandawana in 2011, this is his fourth PSL title with the club that extended his services with them for another four and half years early this year.
