Soroti Catholic Diocese gets new bishop

Pope Francis Xavier has appointed Rev. Fr. Joseph Oliach Eciru as the new Bishop for Soroti Catholic Diocese.

In a letter dated 13th, March, 2019 to All Bishops of Uganda, Rev Fr Alfred Rayan D'Souza said the pope had appointed Eciru who is presently working has a staff of St. Mary’s Major Seminary Ggaba, as the new Bishop of the vacant seat at the Diocese of Soroti.

The new Soroti Bishop is a born of Gweri Sub County under St. Patrick Catholic Parish Madera and was ordained as a Diocesan Catholic Priest in August 2003 together with Rev. Fr.  Ongereny Gonzaga WaziWazi Aloysius and Rev.  Fr.  Ebwolu Paul.

The position of a Bishop in Soroti Catholic Diocese fell vacant when Pope Francis appointed the Bishop of Soroti, Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo, as the new Archbishop of Tororo Archdiocese in January 2014.

Since then the Rt. Rev. Emmanuel Obbo has been the apostolic administrator for the diocese.

However, sources at Soroti Catholic Diocese revealed that the Vicar General of Soroti Catholic Diocese has called all the priests of Soroti Catholic Diocese for a meeting on the way forward.
