Lt Gen Elwelu cautions UPDF against laxity in war against Al-Shabab

The UPDF Commander of Land Forces, Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu,  has said Uganda is concern about the welfare of troops in the Mission area in Somalia.

Lt. Gen. Elwelu revealed during a working visit to Somalia last week, where he Ugandan forces to work as a team in order to overcome the challenges in Somalia and consolidate the achievements made so far.

Elwelu interacted with troops in AMISOM’s Forward Operating Bases located in areas under the control of the Ugandan contingent.“

Protect yourself, work as a team in order to overcome the challenges that you face and consolidate the achievements made so far,” he told the troops.

He cautioned the Ugandan contingent against laxity, warning the al Shabab still poses a serious threat not only to the forces but also the region.

Gen. Elwelu challenged the UPDF to remain alert and closely monitor the movements of the Al-Shabaab extremists.

“Remember that Al-Shabaab are at home. They are not in hurry. When you relax, that is when they will strike,” he cautioned them.

Elwelu also expressed gratitude to host communities living near the Forward Operating Bases, for the support they have accorded AMISOM troops, saying that without support, AMISOM troops would not have managed to operate effectively.

Underscoring AMISOM’s achievements since 2007 when the AU troops first deployed in Somalia, he noted that Somalia was well on the road to full recovery.
